The Trust has also introduced combined heat and power technology at Castle Hill to capture and use the heat created as a byproduct of the electricity generation process . Together , these schemes have helped reduce the amount of imported emissions from electricity and , for large periods over summer , actively export energy to the National Grid .
Electric vehicles
According to a 2019 report by the Journal of Paramedic Practice , an average of 31.3 kg of carbon dioxide ( CO 2
) is produced per ambulance response in the current boxshaped ambulance design .
In 2022 , new NHS electric vehicles hit the road , helping to relieve pressure on ambulance services across the country while also helping the NHS cut its carbon footprint .
Eight ambulance trusts trialled 21 zeroemission vehicles of various types , with six of the new green vehicles dedicated to mental health response in the community – designed to cut emergency response times for people with mental health needs and help reduce demand on traditional doublecrewed ambulances .
The vehicles are part of a £ 2.1 million investment , as the NHS becomes the first health service in the world to commit to reaching net zero by 2040 , with each Trust agreeing a plan to achieve huge carbon savings in the coming years – equivalent to taking over half a million cars off the road .
But electrified medical vehicles don ’ t stop at roads .
Airmedic and Limosa recently announced a visionary partnership in the electrification of air medical transportation . This combination represents a powerful synergy between innovation and practical application , promising a revolutionary breakthrough in air medical transport services through cuttingedge eco-friendly technology .
This unique collaboration brings together Limosa ’ s expertise and Airmedic ’ s operational excellence , with the aim of improving the interior design and functionality of LimoMedic , the ambulance version of Limosa ’ s electric vertical and conventional take-off and landing ( eVTOL / eCTOL ) aircraft to meet the specific needs and recommendations of air ambulance operators .
Sophie Larochelle , Chief Executive Officer of Airmedic , highlighted their commitment to sustainable operations . “ We are at the beginning of an extraordinary journey in the electric transportation sector . We are particularly sensitive to the ecological footprint of our sector , and with this partnership , we would have the opportunity to commit to sustainability , as we believe in the innovation of zero-emission aircraft ,” she said .
